Janet Golder Kngwarreye
Janet is an Anmatyerre woman from the Utopia region. She learned to paint at a young age from her grandmother, celebrated artist Polly Ngale. Her grandfather, Kudditji Kngwarreye is remembered as another giant of the desert art movement. In fact generations of Janet’s family are widely celebrated and exhibited artists.
Growing up in the 1980s, the batik movement was in full swing and stories were translated from lines in the sand, to new mediums of silk and eventually to canvas, using new techniques and bold bright colour.
Janet paints her country, bushtucker themes, bush flowers and bush medicine. She uses a variety of techniques and layers of colour in her work. She combines broad brush strokes, fine line and dot work to complete her paintings. Widely exhibited across Australia and internationally Janet remains a popular and highly sought after artist.
